Norway | intro/Tafeltinden | chapter 1/5

Ho conosciuto Steven, Phil, Dave, Gerry e Elliot l’anno scorso. Abbiamo fatto delle uscite di freeride a casa mia, in zona Sauze/Sestriere, di cui una con una breve risalita con le pelli per andare a sciare la Lattea. Dalla Lattea siamo poi finiti ad organizzare una gita in zona monte Bianco, la classica Vallee Blanche. E poi, davanti ad un meritato panino, qualche birra e molto entusiasmo per la settimana appena conclusasi, è nata la mia proposta: l’anno prossimo andiamo a fare scialpinismo in Norvegia.

Ero consapevole che la loro esperienza con le pelli fosse limitata a solo una brevissima uscita fatta insieme, ma allo stesso tempo ero anche sicuro della determinazione che avrebbero avuto nel preparasi per un potenziale viaggio nel circolo polare artico.

Ed è così che ci ritroviamo a comprare i voli e a pianificare la nostra settimana nelle Lyngen Alps. Al gruppo si aggiunge anche Ali, sorella di Steven, e anche la Russolo, perché vuoi non fotografare come si deve la prima esperienza in Norvegia?!

Le previsioni meteo sembrano essere dalla nostra e la prima giornata nei pressi di Koppangen si rivela uno spettacolo per gli occhi e anche per i nostri sci.

30 cm di neve fresca caduta nella notte, cielo terso e zero nuvole all’orizzonte. 

Ci addentriamo nel ghiacciaio che porta al Tafeltinden, il nostro obbiettivo giornaliero. Davanti a noi ci sono altri gruppi che ci hanno anticipato e stanno battendo traccia. Per i ragazzi quella di oggi sarà la gita con più dislivello positivo della stagione, nonché’ della loro vita 😉 Sono tutti motivatissimi, tranne e i piedi di Phil che gli danno un bel benvenuto in Norvegia a suon di vesciche. È il primo giorno, le condizioni sono fantastiche e si prospetta davanti a noi una settimana decisamente promettente. Decido di non tirargli subito troppo il collo e dunque optiamo per scendere in un vallone laterale, senza toccare la nostra “vera vetta”.  Attorno a noi c’è un panorama da togliere il fiato. Cime imbiancate, giochi di luce e ombra sul manto vergine, e, nel fondo valle il mare. 

Le prime curve sono una goduria. Il primo che parte inizia subito ad urlare di gioia. La neve è una bomba e tutti sono entusiasti. 

Arriviamo alla macchina con un gran sorriso sul volto. Come battesimo norvegese non potevamo chiedere di meglio.

I met Steven, Phil, Dave, Gerry and Elliot last year. We spent some days together in my home resort, Sauze/Sestriere, skiing off-piste in my beloved mountains. We did a bit of skitouring. and then we went to Courmayeur to ski the Vallee Blanche. At the end of the day in front of a well-deserved sandwich, a few beers and a lot of enthusiasm, my idea was born: next year we’ll go skitouring in Norway.

I was aware that their experience with ski touring was limited to just a very short tour together, but at the same time I was also confident in the determination they would have in preparing for a potential trip to the Arctic Circle. From the original group who was skiing with me in Sauze we have two new entries. Steven’s sister Ali and my Ali. So that everyone will have great photos taken during their first Norwegian experience. 

The weather forecast seems to be on our side and the first day near Koppangen turns out to be amazing for the eyes and also for our skis.

We enter the glacier that leads up to Tafeltinden. In front of us there are other groups who anticipated us and are opening the track. For the team today will be the tour with the most positive elevation gain of the season, and probably of their lives 😉 They are all very motivated, except for Phil’s feet. He quickly understood that trying new pair of boots for the first time today was not a good idea 😉 It’s the first day, the conditions are fantastic and we have a very promising week ahead of us. I decided to take it easy today and therefore we opt to make the tour a little bit shorter than planned, and we descend into a side valley, without touching our “real summit”. Around us there the view is breathtaking. Mountain covered in snow and the sea at the bottom of the valley.

First turns are real joy. The snow is a great and everyone is having fun.

We reach the cars with a big smile on our faces. great start of this Norwegian adventure.
